Sharia Law in UK? Archbishop’s Comments.

Posted in News on February 8, 2008 by HERI Webmaster

 [from BBC News website]

The Archbishop of Canterbury has come under fire after appearing to back the adoption of Sharia law in the UK. The prime minister’s spokesman said Sharia law could never be used to justify a breach of English law.

Home Office Minister Tony McNulty said: “To ask us to fundamentally change the rule of law and to adopt Sharia law, I think, is fundamentally wrong.”

Dr Rowan Williams told BBC Radio 4 he believed the adoption of some Sharia law in the UK seemed “unavoidable”.

UK government acts on hoax e-mail

Holocaust education rumour e-mail

The hoax e-mail has been circulating for months

 [from BBC News website]

The UK government is taking the unprecedented step of writing to every embassy to stop a false e-mail rumour about Holocaust teaching being banned.

A widely-circulated e-mail has falsely claimed that schools in the UK will stop teaching the Holocaust because it might cause offence to Muslims.

Schools Secretary Ed Balls says he wants to “put an end once and for all to the myth” spread by the e-mail.

He says teaching the Holocaust remains “non-negotiable” in England.

This formal government rebuttal of a hoax e-mail has been prompted by a persistent rumour that “UK schools” are set to remove the Holocaust from the curriculum.

Faith & Peace in Bradford

Posted in Conferences & Events on February 3, 2008 by HERI Webmaster

At a time when the talk is of identity and community, faith and social cohesion, conflict and peace building, are people of faith part of the problem or the solution?

As people of faith, we believe we have some very positive things to offer the city in the search for peace.  Our sense of belonging and community identity is an important part of this, it is linked to our hopes and aspirations, how we organize as a group and how we relate to others.  So, gaining a deeper understanding of our identity and other faith’s identities is a way to greater understanding of how we contribute to peacemaking.

Take the opportunity to hear from Professor Sebastian Kim speaking on this topic at the Annual BCDD Lecture:

Community Identity and Peacemaking: Meaningful Engagement of Religious Communities in Contemporary Society

Monday 10th March, 6.30pm
John Stanley Bell Lecture Theatre, University of Bradford

In this lecture Professor Kim will draw on recently published research on identity and faith communities.  He will describe the ways different faith communities interact with each other and wider society, and identify ways to build peace.

Professor Sebastian Kim is the first Professor of Theology at Yorkshire’s newest university, York St John University.  He has previously taught at the University of Cambridge, Seminaries in Seoul and in Pune, India.  His areas of specialist knowledge include World Christianity, Public Theology and Community and Identity.

If you would like to attend please contact Carmel Dylak at BCDD on 01274 488144 or admin@bcdd.org.uk
